The question is rather ambiguous. Do you mean the American government or the American people. I'm an American and I have no love for the federal government or the citizens that voted for our current leader. I do, however, love America--it's history and idealogy. We've gotten away from what made this country great.
I don't think any rational person, foreign or otherwise, would be so narrow as to lump all Americans into one group, to be made a target of hatred. It's perfectly understandable for the world community to disagree with our governmental policies, as many of our own citizens do. This administration has adopted policies that have direct and indirect consequences for practically every nation on earth.
Our criminal environmental standards (or lack thereof) have dire consequences both for our immediate neighbors to the north and south, and the globe as a whole.
A unilateralist foreign policy that alienates our allies in the UN, clearly falsified evidence leading to the Iraq invasion, and tactless off-the-cuff remarks belittling other nations have certainly earned our leader, and by extension ourselves much disrepect.
Those are some of the reasons our government is hated.
When a person asks why America is hated and an American citizen replies "Because the rest of the world is jealous." This mentality, while not necessarily endemic, is the reason the American people are hated. We are allowing a vocal minority (God, I hope it's a minority) of myopic morons to act as our ambassadors.
People do not strap explosives to their chests because of jealousy.

I don't know that the entire world hates America. I know that certain parts of the world have certain groups within their civilizations that "hate" America. It's kind of like the people in America who "hate" France. Not everyone feels that way, but some do. I think the reason that some people "hate" America is because of our shady foreign policies, and lack of certain aid where it is needed, and an abundance of aid where it is not needed. Sometimes we are viewed as the nation trying to through their weight around the most. The reason a lot of people in America "France" is because France refused to aid us in certain wars. The reason a lot of people in "France" hate America, is because we keep asking them to join us in some war. It's kind of 50/50. That and we have a lot of fat, loud, and obnoxiously ignorant people who visit foreign nations and act like apes. There seem to be a lot of Americans who are offended by the fact that people speak their native language in their own country. I think that somewhere along the way they developed the opinion that everyone in the entire world should speak American English. Again, this does not go for all Americans, but a good amount. In addition we have a lot of overzealous, and egotistical Americans traveling abroad.
I would also like to state for the record that America does not have the leading Economy. If we did, the Euro and the Pound would not be worth more than the dollar. We just shout louder than most, and crave more attention than most. We want to spread democracy everywhere...although we don't even have a democracy here. We have a democratic republic...there is a large difference. A true democracy would almost be impossible to sustain...and probably wouldn't work all that well...

Most likely reason being because of all the innocent deaths in Iraq, Afghainstan and the fact that American governement keeps on threatening other countries with war. Also the terrible Gunatanamo Bay prison. Secret prisons of abuse in other countries. No apologizing for Vietnam, Gernada and all other atrocities in other counrties over the years that America has had independence? What do you think?

Because we have this habit of starting wars that don't seem to end, and when they do end, we can't seem to remember why we started them in the first place.
