I am from the West Indies and I have always admired african americans. Their strength and drive to overcome the odds that folks from the caribbean didn't have to deal with such as racism etc but I was listening to a talk show yesterday and I was blown away about this girl's (african american) comments. I know america is economically better than the west indies but I can't believe that they think they are superior. Is this true? Anyone else had encountered or experienced this?

Many Americans think that they are superior, no mater what their racial or ethnic background is. This chauvinistic nationalism can be found in many countries.

i was surprised to learn that many African Americans believe themselves better and more deserving than recent African immigrants and west Indian citizens.

but i was also surprised to learn that there is a hierarchy in the black community with those possessing the darker skin tones being derided and put down by those possessed of lighter skin.

i guess that ignorance is everywhere
fortunatly the ignorant are outnumbered by sensible folks, even if jerks do shout the loudest.

It doesn't matter where people live, you are always going to find some who think they are superior, best example is Hitler; he believed that fair haired, fair skinned, blue eyed people were superior.

Some people are just ignorant and most often, it is those who have a very low education that believe they are better than others.

It doesn't matter if it is race, religion or even weight, there will always be discrimination. I wish it were different but that is the way it is.

I have experienced the African-American/African debate a few times in my life. I have never experienced the West Indian/African American debate. In Panama, all of us blacks both descendants of Jamaicans and African-American slaves worked side by side to build the Canal so we consider ourselves brothersand sisters basically. The attitude you speak of seems to run rampid in the USA amongst everyone not just blacks.

I know American Blacks who say all the Caribbean people think they are better than American Blacks, because they(the Caribbean Blacks) say they know where they come from and where they going. They claim to live and work with a purpose. They also own their own land -I think ,so they don't have to cowtow to anyone else. They arrest white people on their island-and keep them locked up.

she's just one person, every race has a ignorant, stuck-up person. Don't worry about her. If you are black, then nobody would even kno that you are not African. Most africans probaly embrace you as a sista, don't worry about one *****.

just because you heard some misguided person you can't assume that every black person feels this way, there is someone in every race who thinks that they are better than another race, don't say they cause that lumps us all together!!!
