If I have an alkyl halide such as CH3CH2Br what is the easiest way to add an -OH group?

Mixed with the watter
CH3CH2Br + H2O =CH3CH2OH + HBr

react the alkyl halide with NaOH to get ethanol and NaBr; the reaction will be Sn2

Simply reacting it in water and ethanol will work. You could use an SN1 or SN2 reaction.
