Sonography.
Sound waves bounce off the bottom of the ocean and we measure how long it takes them to get back-- since we know how fast sounds travels.

Sonar waves are sound waves that are sent from a surface ship. These bounce off the bottom and return to the ship. Since the speed of sound in salt water is relatively constant, one can calculate the depth by this formula:

Depth = (Speed of sound in water) x (Two-way travel time/2)
