I think it's clear that he is. People hate on him for various reasons. What Wade did against Dallas was semi-impressive. Kobe had 62 points on Dallas and didn't play the last 17 minutes of the game. How good would Wade be with Kobe's supporting cast? Remember he's the 1st person to average more than 35 points in a season in over 18 years. LeBron and D. Wade or pretty good players but remember Kobe won his 1st title at 21 and averaged around 28 points that season.

Apart from his personal character - since the question is about his ability, not his person - NO, Kobe has perhaps the deepest personal skill set of any NBA player presently in the game, but being the best player also must include the inate ability to make his surrounding teammates better as well.
That is clearly something I have not seen in Kobe's game. While MJ was far and away the most talented player on his team (and in the game, in my opinion), what also defined MJ as the acme of NBA talent was his unselfish, collaborative understanding of the strength of the team as greater than the one.
This is what the Detroit Pistons demonstrated during their championship, and what the LA Lakers clearly displayed in their lack of team chemistry during their "dream lineup" implosion.
Until Kobe has the team leader's head to go along with his admittedly monstrous talent and inherent skills, he'll never be eligible for the "best of" nomination.

I agree with Timothy W...Kobe has a deep skillset and clearly has a predatorial-ability to dominate.
But I hear word his defence is suspect..plus he has very few leadership characteristics - people don't really like playing with him. He doesn't make others better and therefore he's probably not going to win another championship. Especially after that game 7 performance against Phoenix.
I reckon the best player is the one who's going to bring you to the finals. Someone with stats and the intangibles that make the difference. Nash would be my choice. He's like a more dynamic John Stockton and for some reason everyone gets better when they're on his team.

some say Kobe Bryant is the best in the league, but obviously the best player in the NBA is the one who just won the championship for his team and the city of Miami-Dwayne Wade!! (I have no problem admitting that AND being a Spurs fan!)

It comes down to this:
If you could have any player make the last basket of the game, who would you give it to??
I know that Kobe will make that shot, anyone else is a toss up!

if by "best player" you mean biggest cry baby and human wasteland then yes kobe is your man, otherwise i would suggest players like wade, shaq, lebron, nash, and garnett. kobe's key to success was this little thing i like to call shaquille oneal, and it is plain to see that without shaq kobe is unable, and always will be unable, to win a championship period.
