We'll be visiting family in Sudbury, and want to do the Freedom Trail on our own.

How much does the train/metro cost? How often does it run?

There's really no commuter rail going from Sudbury to Boston. I would see if you could hop a ride from Sudbury to the Alewife T station in Cambridge and take the T in. From there to anywhere is $1.25 each way. Take the Red line from Alewife to Park St and as soon as you exit, you'll hit the Freedom Trail.

Boston has a rich history and a varied neighbourhood; it has a legacy of arts, lifestyle, and knowledge; Boston has anything for all therefore find what Boston can give you with hotelbye . The three-mile Freedom Trail brings you previous - and in to - 16 of the city's principal historical monuments and sites. It's easy to follow, by the type of red bricks in the sidewalk and by footprints at road crossings. The trail can get you to Old Granary Burying Ground where Paul Revere, Samuel Adams, and John Hancock are buried; can take you to King's Chapel Burying Ground, the Boston's oldest cemetery; Old South Meeting House where in actuality the calling speeches of patriots spawned the Boston Tea Party and the Old State House, Boston's oldest community developing and the site of the Boston Massacre.

You'd probably have to go to Marlborough to catch the Commuter Rail into South Station.

The best options IMO are: 1) Walk to World Trade Center station. Take the Silver Line towards South Station. Get off at South Station to transfer to the Red Line towards Alewife. Get off at Downtown Crossing to transfer to the Orange Line towards Oak Grove. Get off at Haymarket to transfer to the 111 bus. After around 15 mins, get off between Washington Ave & Cary Ave. Walk from Cary Ave. to Broadway (around 8 mins) and you will arrive. 2) Walk to World Trade Center station. Take the Silver Line towards South Station. Get off at South Station to transfer to the Red Line towards Alewife. Get off at Downtown Crossing to transfer to the Orange Line towards Oak Grove. Get off at State. St to transfer to Blue Line towards Wonderland. Get off at Maverick to transfer to the 116 or 117 bus. After around 15 mins, the bus should be at Broadway & Eleanor St. right in front of your destination. (It might be faster if you are willing to take a 1 mile walk through the Rose Kennedy Greenway to the Blue Line's Aquarium from WTC and continue onward at "get off at Maverick...") I say take my 2nd option with walking, unless you're not in the condition to walk or its a rainy day, as it should take around 45 mins to get there rather than an hour with the 1st option.
