I've heard that these internt accounts tend to offer the user a great deal of anonymity. Is that true? If so, what is it about them that protects the user's identity in a way that other non-internet accounts don't. Just curious. Thanks!

The IP address that you are posting the email message from is included in the headers of the email messages you send.

It doesn't take much for an ISP to cut-off your service if you're thinking about doing something either illegal or immoral and all the ISP needs is your IP address and a complaint against you.

Finally, when you signed-up with the "free" internet email service, you provided them with some amount of information and your IP address was captured at that time as well. If someone serves the "free" internet email service with a search warrant, they'll turn over all the information they have on you in a heartbeat.

The long of the short of it is... the idea that you have anonymity on the internet is just plain wrong. If someone wants to find you bad enough, they will.

Well hotmail and yahoo free email accounts are notorious for lack of anonymonity. The IP address is easily traced back if you use these sevices. I have gmail and know that the IP address can not be traced back.

You can get someone to send you a gmail invite or sign up for free using your cellphone text feature to receive a code from them.

Just as anonymous as pop3 accounts.....third party e-mails are created by the user providing their e-mail address to contests or subscriptions to downloads or magazines

hotmail sucks worse less than yahoo. Yahoo, you have to sign in....then click mail....then click inbox....then if your lucky, you might get to see your e-mail......I know, it's silly to complain, but when their pages load so slow at times or not at all, it gets frustrating....I can undsetand signing in, but after that, you should be able to go stright to your inbox without having to go to around your ****** to get to your elbow. Hotmail stinks, because you have to add the @hotmail.com......like.....they don't know how to fix that.
