Even if someone says don't worry about paying them back, the honorable thing IS to pay them back anyway.

Since it's been 4 years since she asked for it back, it's rather a moot point. If you haven't talked, is it a friendship worth saving? Also, was the cutting off of contact done over the money?
At this point, I would do nothing. Whatever the money was needed for should have passed, and she has apparently forgotten or moved on.
However, if this situation were to occur recently (for those who may have this kind of situation currently), you have every right to ask why they changed their mind. Especially if you've spent it or have planned around having that money, they don't own that money anymore and don't have any standing to demand that you give it back. However, as long as the reason is good enough (and you can trust the person) it may not be bad to give some small portion to help them out in turn.

During that time frame, she told you guys not to worry about it. Four years later, she is asking for it back. It looks like she was trying to be a friend and have you guys not worry about paying her back because you and your husband were trying to start off new. Both of you should talk to her and find out why does she need her money back. More than likely, she needs it back because she is struggling and she is trying to make it in society. Since she asked for it back, you guys could make some kind of payment arrangements and give your friend her money back.

You should talk to her and find out why now of all times is she asking for the money back. You should tell her that she had told you guys not to worry about it 4 years ago and that you do not have the money now. i don't know what a court would say about this , I would call a lawyer and get some advise.

You should try to pay her back. Maybe she just meant not to worry about it at that time. Then she needed it. It sounds like it was a large amount of money. Never borrow money from friends.

Just tell her you don't have the money and that she should have let you know from the beginning that it was a loan that way you guys could make arrangements for repayment. True friends don't go back on their word.

Make an attempt to pay her back...even if it is small amounts...but at least try. After all...it was her money that helped you out..
