Don't take the advice of random people on the internet, especially when (like the third poster) they don't know what they're talking about.

Violation of copyright laws is illegal, kinda by definition. How do you know if a specific action is in violation of copyright laws? Consult with a licensed attorney who will ask you lots of questions about specifically what you are doing.

But generally, renting a movie gives a specific license to use (view) the movie. Just like buying a copy of a movie gives you a different specific license and set of rights. Exceeding the scope of the license would be unauthorized use, which likely means unauthorized copying. And unauthorized copying is a violation of Copyright laws.

Yes it is illegal. However, it is unlikely that the FBI will come to your house to check through your videos. Just make sure you don't sell them to friends, family or at a fleamarket...then you'll really be in trouble! Although it is unlikely that the FBI will come check your home, if they do find out, the fines are hefty. Your friend is correct.

Not illegal for your personal use. Recording copyrighted material and selling it is a different story. Your friend is right.
