The same reason blacks still hold their bag when another black walks by them. The percentage of crimes committed by blacks, per population is higher than any other race. Blacks don't even trust blacks.

I think the answers you will receive will be very personalized. For me, the only time I feel like doing that is if it's late at night, I'm on my own, and the person(s) in question are dressed like thugs. Then again, this makes me uncomfortable regardless of the race. I actually have a black friend who has commented to me that he feels uneasy around groups of black men that he doesn't know who dress a certain way and are very loud and aggressive. Certainly the media has played a role in movies, television, music, etc., where if you project an image associated with a "gansta" lifestyle, people are going to be suspicious.
But again, it would have to be a situation where I may be vunerable to anyone coming along. Otherwise, I don't worry about it. If I'm around people acting normally, it doesn't even cross my mind.
PS - I think you should watch the movie "Crash" if you haven't already. It kind of addresses both sides of the purse issue.

I think you are just paranoid and need to realize that it is black people that always accuse white people of holding THEIR bags or locking THEIR doors when a black person comes THEIR way. REALLY white people are so over this racist S**T and wish that THEIR black neighbors would finally get over it too!

I think that this is a characteristic that is ingrained in us as children. Look at t.v. shows for instance most t.v. shows portray black people as bad people and white people seem to be afraid of them and most white people hang around white people so they feel more comfortable around white people and when someone black comes near them they feel afraid because that person is different from them and they don't necessarily understand their culture. I think in short the reason is ignorance. Not that these people are stupid but they are uninformed and I think that if white people and black people learned more about one another's cultures that this would not be as much of an issue.

I hold onto my purse when just about anyone is walking towards me or I'm walking past someone. (I say just about anyone because if, say, the person is some 6 yr old coming out of their house, or some lady with half a dozen little kids in tow then I don't hold onto it as tightly.)
It has nothing to do with skin color and everything to do with I don't know who the person is, so I don't know if they are a purse snatcher or not.
There are good and bad people of all walks of life - to assume any one nationality or ethnic group has the corner market on any behavior trait (good or bad) is stupid.

Hey asking a racist question while attempting to complain about racism nice work.
Here are some questions for you to ponder...
Was this person already holding their bag?
or
Does this person do this whenever anyone comes within a certain distance?

Because some whites stereotype black people. They believe ALL blacks are thieves just as they believe all bald white people are gangsters and white trash. Common in the North and Mid-West US.

Here are a few reasons
1. Obessesive compulsive disorder, prevalent among capitalist societies.
2. A past experience of blacks that they trusted stealing from them.
3. Cultural notion that most blacks are thieves, because most people in U.S. prisons are black, and most people portrayed on news and in movies as doing crime are black.

If they do, it's because almost every time they see a black person on TV, it's in a negative way (i.e. pimps, hoes, thieves and drug addicts.) It's kind of sad because more likely than not, the black person will NOT steal your bag.
