He is the NL Batting Title leader as of now (.359 avg) and is much better than his own 1B (Berkman) who he took. Luckily Normar got in on the Final Vote, but what was Garner thinking?

Gardner wants to lose the All Star Game.

He wants his old team (The Tigers) home field advantage in the WORLD Series.

First base is a strong position. Pujols was picked to start; Ryan Howard's 28 home runs were leading the league when the teams were picked, so it would be strange to leave him off; and Lance Berkman was picked because they needed someone from the Astros and he was the best choice. It wasn't that Garciaparra was undeserving, only that several other first basemen were just as deserving and their presence was required for some non-performance reasons.

Nomar is far worse than Berkman and if the choice was either Berkman or Garciaparra, then the right choice was made. However, I do believe Nomar belonged, but it isn't as bad as Liriano, Hafner, and Verlander being left off the AL roster.

Plus, Garciaparra has been added to the All-Star game by the voters.

managers really don't have much say (they only get to pick like 3 guys after the fan voting, player/coach's voting, filling in a player from every team, etc.).

Fans picked Pujols. Berkman is the Astros only pick. Howard leads the majors in home runs....how many 1st baseman do you need (the fans seem to think 4 I guess)

cant really fault garner at all for this........by rule, each team must have at least one representative and his selection of lance berkman is the astros only player on the all star squad.

garner really deserves praise as usually all star managers tend to select several of their own players, often at the expense of other far more deserving players from other teams.

in general though, it is very tough selecting an all star roster when you have a cap on the number of players....no matter who you pick and the reasons why, there are still going to be at least a handful of deserving players who must be omitted.

Because he's crazy, and because, believe it or not, Nomar is overshadowed by Pujols.
