Underemployed...meaning you are not getting paid what you are worth???

She probably means underpaid, which is usually the economic use of the word. Pay usually denotes talent, education, mental stimulation, these things usually rise with pay, yet not always. I feel underemployed, but not because I have credentials that exceed my position, but just inherit talent that is not being used in my current position. I sell cell phones, and it is not very intellectually stimulating, I am returning to school to become a teacher and one day a professor of African American history.

I think you mean under utilized. You probably have alot of talent and feel its not being used where you are. I know I like a challenge, nothing stops you from looking for better employment. Brush of the resume', pump up your self confidence and look for another job. Or if possible seek more responsibility where you are at. Write up the reasons on paper why you think you could handle a certain job, your qualifications ,experience etc.Bring it to your boss and ask for more responsibility if you think you can handle it. I did it and got a big raise and a new challenge. It made me feel good too that I was pro-active about getting what I wanted. Good Luck

Underemployed & underutilized both.

Where I work, I'm a cashier, bagger, maintenance lady, stocker, team captain, carriage collector, bottle room girl, cashier trainer, service clerk, bookkeeper, & produce/salad bar girl. I was their Associate of the Year last year. Now they're talking about having me train in the deli. & right now, I'm only getting paid $9.75 PER HOUR, & I've been there 3 years! So yeah, I'm VERY frustrated.

Underemployed?

Do you mean underpaid, because I am employed 40 hours a week and that's enough!

I think it is normal to feel that you are not being used to your full potential. Remember that you know all your own strengths, and your employers might not. Don't be afraid to blow your own horn a little. I don't mean telling everyone egotistically that you are great or anything, but don't be afraid to go to the boss with a great idea. Any boss is happy to hear ideas from a go-getter that will help their company make more profit!

For a good book on the subject, read "How I Raised Myself from Failure to Success in Selling" by Frank Bettger. The language in it is dated, but the ideas are not; and it's not just about being a salesman, it is about connecting to people who can help your career (from your customers to your coworkers to your boss to your community to the head-hunter!)

Underpaid ??? Hell Yeah !!! I clean the office everyday (M-F) & they expect me to clean EVERY crook & cranny for only $300 a mo !!! They also shouldn't expect me to clean it all up in 20 hrs either (even tho that sounds like a lot).
I only get paid for 2 hrs everyday. So if I take time off, I only get 2 hrs off. But, then again I'm not taking much time off. I think it's time for me to get a new job as soon as I can finish skewl !!! which is not gonna be soon... :(

I'm an MBA graduate with several securities licenses and recipient of academic awards.

Yet, the only job I can get is as a clerk making $11/hour.

There are certainly times when I feel like there is not enough work, but right now I'm in an incredibly busy rush and my only complaint is that I feel like I'm underpaid.

No, I went to trade school and found a job I love. Maybe you should make finding a more rewarding career one of your goals.
