She might be in season...

Do not worry at all. We have a female Syrian hamster and 99% of the time she is cute and lovely and just occasionally she goes a little mad too. She bit us, ran up the settee and went mad trying to escape. She also does the same thing with the saw dust. A few days later she is fine again. I am sure it is just her lady time of the month, when she is feeling fragile and does not want to be handled. As I said, it does not last long and she will be back to normal soon.

Also I did see on here somewhere that someone mentioned that they gave their hamster lettuce. Please DO NOT do this as I read that it is very dangerous for them to eat.

Some say genetics, others the environment. I am serious by the way. I think animals can think (differently than humans of course), and can feel emotions (maybe not entirely different). These abilities vary, of course, from species to species.

For example, an average Rottweiler has (apparently) an innate genetic disposition towards unpredictable outbursts of violence, while the same animal can also be trained to express that later violent nature.

Or could be your hamster just has a bad hair day and flipped out!

Best of luck,
Davey D.

It may be that she is pregnant. They don't like to be touched, and will bite when they get near the time. Everything you are saying sounds like it. Was she with other hamster when you bought her.?If so its just a little over three weeks before she gives birth. If she has them don't change her cage bedding , Only the weewee corner. feed extra so she won't eat her young. and you should feed her a little dry kitten food. for extra ;proteen. Some new hamster moms eat their first litter. so don't think it terriable. Just wait a week or so and she will be back to her ole self. If she has babies don't try to handle them or her for a couple of weeks. when they are up and walking around with their eyes still closed that is the time to start holding them and get them used to human scent. Good luck.

She could be in season, the only way to check would be to wait a while before handling then try again. Female hamsters can be a bit more temperamental than males and more prone to biting.

she's either in season, or she could be expecting. Was she kept with other hamsters at the pet shop? if so they might not have been sexed properly and there may be some babies coming. That may explain the sudden biting and not moving from one end of the cage.

looking for a suitable mate, and you don't obviously taste too good to a hamster.

on the other hand if it's stopped bleeding, I bought two hamsters and did very much the same with them, they both attacked me one day and drew blood also, they were russian hamsters if that matters. I had to take em back to store, I traded them for 3 gold fish which incidentally have never attacked me or bitten me. so I like them.

She could be in heat or already pregnant. Nesting behavior like you described can be a sign of either. Leave her alone at least a little bit but try to pet her and make sure she feels safe around you.

You can never be sure of the age of a hamster when you buy them and they are almost immediately sexually ready to reproduce!

She may actually be pregnant. Leave her alone for a while, change her food and not her sawdust as she is trying to protect a nest!

i dont personally like hamsters, when i was very young we used to have one and it bit me, since then i have always been wary of them, then i used to work in pet world, and again got bitten by an hamster,..(and they bite hard!!)

i dont like them, and they dont like me,...however mice a really nice, and i have never been bitten from holding a mouse, i think the animal labs should free the friendly little mice and use hamsters instead !!

Sounds like she is in season. Give her a slice of apple to munch on while you are handling her. We have 2 Hamsters and Have had them from very young, we handle them very often and they are very tame. Try wearing cloves until you get your confidence back.

Good luck.
