Technically it refers to being happy but it is often used to describe homosexuals (who can be quite happy as well).

The word gay has duel meanings. In the good old days it meant happy and cheerful. However, now when we currently hear the word gay it means a person attracted to their own sex gender or homosexual.

The word gay originally menat happy, carefree but somewhere in the 50's/60's it also became an acronym for Good As You - GAY.

"Gay" can mean a few things. It can mean you are attracted to the same sex (usually aimed toward males), happy or REALLY happy, or in these days (used by teens mostly, not really common in adults. At all.), "you suck" or, in other words, "I don't like you (in a joking way) because you....". depends on what's goin' on. There you go! See ya!

Gay is supposed to mean "happy" (example; "i feel pretty and happy and gay!", maria, west side story)
now it can mean homosexual, some even use it to say bisexual.
and another meaning (which doesn't make sense) is people will say "oh that's gay" meaning "oh that's dumb"

There are two definitions...one is the old version which says that gay means happy and unencumbered...the other means homosexual...the homosexual definition is most common today.
