Yes it shlould be fine as long as you know it is clean, which I mean that it is free from pesticides and any chemicals at all. Then you must sift it and make sure there is nothing foreign in it like insects etc.
Then take the sand and wet it with de-chlorinated water, place about an inch onto a cookie sheet or similar pan and bake it at 400 degrees until steaming.... stir it well and allow to steam more, then remove and allow to cool. Keep doing this until all the sand has been cleaned this way. This is the proper sterilization technique for found things like sand, wood, bark etc.
Somethings you can boil like rocks and shells and other things you need to bake.
It is true that in the wild Hermit Crabs come into contact with all kinds of things and nothing in their habitat in the wild is sterilized... BUT they are used to whatever is found naturally in their enviromnment AND since they can get away form things and their natural environment is much bigger than an at home tank set-up we need to make it as safe as we can to assure long and healthy lives for our pets.

Hermit crabs come from sandy areas, so all sand should be about the same. You might want to sift the sand and make sure it is dry but there shouldn't be any problems with using desert sand or beach sand.

Whenver using natural sand your best bet is to wet it and bake it in your oven for 20 minutes at 250. Because crabs nibble even the sand anything on them will become part of your tank. If there is any farming or spraying for insects in that area you should avoid the sand and opt for playsand instead.
