IP address on computer. How do I?

Question

get to where I can correct the IP address? We just got a different service and computer in living room won't go on-line. Have a Linksys Router and wireless connection. If you have any other suggestions, I'd appreciate it. Very frustrated and not highly intelligent about the set up process - well......just ignorant but not stupid.

Your computer can operate on several IP addresses, and when you are on a local netowrk and the internet you do. To find your IP address as viewed by remote computers on the internet, the quickest way is to connect o a website that shows you the IP you connected to the world with:

http://www.showmyip.com/

http://www.whatismyipaddress.com/


PS - Note that ipconfig will return your ip and gateway ips for each network adapter you are on, but not the IP your are accessing the internet with through your router.

Simplest is to restart your computer. If the router is broadcasting DHCP your computer will automatically renew its IP address.
If not, from a command prompt type: ipconfig /release, then: ipconfig /renew.
If that doesn't work either your router isn't serving DHCP or your computer is hard-coded. Go to start/control panel/network connections. Right click your local area connection and go to properties. Scroll down to the TCP/IP settings (typically the last on the list) and double-click. Change the settings to automatic if they aren't set that way already. If they are, and you still aren't getting a correct IP address, then set them to manual and input the IP numbers manually.

IP address is assigned by the internet provider automatically. You don't need to do anything to change it. If you have a wireless connection, you should be able to find your connection in the "Wireless Network Connection" window, and just connect to that.

Well, they may be 2 options:

1.- You don't need a specific IP. Try entering ms-dos (start->run write "cmd" press Enter). On ms-dos write: ipconfig /renew. Test if you can connect to internet, if this doesn't work, try option 2.

2.- You really need s specific IP. Open Control Panel (Start->Control Panel). Double Clic on "Network connections", and make a secundary clic on your "Local Area Conn" and select properties. There, select TCP/IP and clic on properties. There you can specify a IP.

If this doesn't work too, maybe it's time to call your ISP support.

Normally ISPs want to know your MAC address... a code specific to the hardware connecting to the service (for billing).

A router has one as does each and every Ethernet device. Contact the ISP and ask them.

You can usually find it by using the router setup (for linksys type http://192.168.1.1/ in a browser).

Go to START>>CONTROL PANEL>>NETWORK CONNECTIONS>>RIGHT-CLICK ON YOUR DEFAULT CONNECTION>>PROPERTIES>>Scroll down to INTERNET PROTOCOL>>SELECT PROPERTIES>>On the GENERAL TAB, make sure that ' Obtain IP address automatically is selected'.

Then go to the computer in the Living room and restart it so it can get an IP address.

Normally to connect to a network, you need to have the user name and password of the network. At least that what we had to do here at my house. We have three wireless computers, my dads the main, so we need to put the user name and password in, in order to connect to the network.

Router

To bypass the router software..this is what you do.....To avoid the configurations and you have enough slots...just avoid plugging modem into wan..plug

them all into slot 1.2.3.4 it will work the same as a splitter

Just have the isp software loaded on every computer and log in as normal

go to start>programs>accessories> command prompt...Here type /ipconfig all
your ip address should show or,you can type in the right one
