My brother-in-law is getting married in the backyard of his new house. Just a small wedding (75 people), on the casual side. Can I get away with a nice black skirt and sweater set, dressed up with a scarf? Or a fancier mid-calf length black number? What should I wear?

I should add that it is an evening wedding -- 7pm.

Hmmm... since you say that it's the evening, and not the day, I would wear something that makes you warm, but not too casual. You don't want to look as if the wdding is unsginificant, and not a very fancy place. But, good for you not picking anything too "ooh-la-la". i would go with a nice black skirt, as you said, but for the top, try wearing something more lighter, and alive. Maybe like a a baby colour or white top with a blazor, anything like that. I can almost imagine you ine it, try as well wearing pearls. Makes you look more stylish, and makes your outfit stand out more.
Good luck on the wedding!

For a backyard wedding, dress like you would if you were going to church on Sunday morning.

My cousin had the same exact deal last week. Some people got more dressed up, some were really casual. I would suggest not wearing black, it's summer. You could wear a cute summer-y dress. There are lots of sundresses that could work. If your looking for something less expensive try http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=191362&CategoryID=14114&LinkType=EverGreen. A medium priced dress could be http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=182899&CategoryID=22121 or http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=185070&CategoryID=22121 or an for expensive one try http://www.lordandtaylor.com/gifts/OnlineShopping/LT?DSP=4&PCR=21:200000:201218:201220&IID=2004329&c=1
Ok, hope this helps. : )
