I was in a minor tornado in Oregon, though I didnt know it was a tornado at the time. In 1998 or 99, I was working with a delivery company. I was returning to our shop in Portland from a trip to Eugene. When I was coming up the hill heading north on I-5 (near enchanted forest), the rain was so hard I had to pull my big truck over to let it pass, I could see anything. Come to find out, when I got on to the road again and could find a radio news station, they informed that a small tornado had touched in Salem and even uprooted a tree and tossed it into a trailer home. Anyway, quite minor compared to tornado country in the mid-west....but a tornado none-the-less.

Oregon doesn't get hurricanes or tornados; we do have water sprouts, have had small earthquakes and could have a big one, the coast is of course subject to tsunami's (tidal waves) and we do get severe storms with winds in excess of 100 mph (60-75 is normal on most of the coast for a good storm).

To find out how bad our storms can get, search for the "Columbus day storm of 1962". Funny, we had such severe storms in 1861 and 1862 too. I suspect it's a 100 year pattern between really big storms with lots of good ones the intervening years.

I grew up in Oregon and never saw a tornado or hurricane. I don't think you get those on the west coast, but don't take my word for it. Do a search on the web for it, and I'm sure you'll find something that can tell you.
