It is interesting that your sixteen-year-old still cares. I thought that they were the preserve of my generation. The reason why he or she may be obsessed with them is that they changed the rules. It was not just the word "grunge" that entered the language. They pretty much erased all of the awful hair-metal bands off the map by combining that same metal sound with the best of punk rock. People wanted something new and they delivered. Personally, when I first heard the group, I thought they would be another indie band that I would like while everyone else ignored them. I can see from your question and the subsequent history behind them that I was wrong.

Ummm....you don't know? They were the biggest musical act of the 90s. They are from Seattle, via Aberdeen, Washington. Singer/songwriter/guitarist Kurt Cobain was an icon of Generation X. Their music was a refreshing change for a lot of young people at the beginning of the nineties who were tired of all of they 80s new wave bands and hair metal bands who had become more of a novelty. Nirvana drew upon their punk rock and indie influences to create their own sound. Their second CD, "Nevermind" starts off with one of the most recognizable guitar riffs at the beginning of "Smells Like Teen Spirit." They were one of the biggest bands in the early 90s, but through it all Kurt Cobain had a pretty bad heroin addiction, and suffered from depression. On April 8, 1994, he shot himself in the mouth with a shotgun, leaving a legacy behind him. Your son loving them is not a surprise to me. When I was his age, I was discovering The Doors. A lot of people my age (I'm 24) listen to bands that were around long before them. Nirvana's music has a pretty timeless element, which is why they are still as popular, if not more so, than when Kurt was alive.
You don't have to worry about your song developing a drug addict by listening to their music, despite what some of the other people say. A lot of his lyrics are kind of hard to understand, as they were pretty personal to him.

I'm not sure there's really a scoop.
The band hasn't been together since the lead singer killed himself in 1994 and occasionally his widow lets some previously unreleased stuff out. Other than that, he probably just likes the music and there's nothing wrong with that. I used to love Nirvana when I was a kid too. In fact, I still like them.

what? where you too busy being a mom during the early 90's when "grunge" ruled the planet?
Nirvana were poster boys for the Seattle rock scene back then .. marreid punk and hard-rock metal... inspired bands like mudhoney, Love Battery, Pearl Jam, Hole, alice in Chain etc..
they did a lot of heroin and the lead singer Kurt Cobain got amrried to Courtney Love, had a kid and then blew his brains out...
so .. maybe make sure Jr keeps his "obsession" in healthy perspective. ; )

They have sucked since I was in high school! And it is so sad that all these young kids have discovered them and think it is good all over again! They would have never still been this popular if Kurt were still alive. In fact they would probably be in a nursing home because of all the drugs and alcohol!

They were the first grundge band out of Seattle to make it. They were really big. At the height of theit success though the lead singer was found dead, most believe it was a suicide, there are a few that believe he was murdered though. He had been in and out of drug treatment centers, Kurt Cobain, a legend, to many in the grundge world.

Your 16 year-old is being brainwashed by corporate media and his sheep-like friends. Tell him/her to listen to what they want, not just what thier friends tell them is cool. Also, you both should do some research into Nirvana, Grunge music in general, and other bands who influnenced Nirvana before determining if he/she likes them.
