It is my belief that the gap is gradually getting smaller. As more and more people are made aware of the world outside there own little community through computers, cell phones, and the internet, they learn to educate themselves toward a better life.

Unfortunately, the "us" in your question have no control over what the USA and the UN do or don't do. These governments are ruled by rich greedy people who want nothing more than to preserve their status quo, no matter who it hurts.

If they perceive a way to do that, while earning points with "us" they will, but that is the only way any change will occur, until the majority of the people of the world reach the point where they realize they don't have to live that way. Then the detritus will impact the ventilator.

A lot of people are doing their part their are so many non profit groups out there to help the poor and getting them food and nessary clothing. I think that if the UN was a little more envolved so much weight would not be put on the US. Many non profits have program that feed the poor outside our country, but as more food is going out our own proverty issues are not being addressed. During the last census(in 2000) it was reported that 12.5% of American fell below proverty level. And those are just the ones that filled out a census form. Althrough there are people outside our country in need we still need to focus a bit more on our own people too.

Does not really seem like the US cares that much about these poorer countries but they always seem to "Come to the aid" of countries where a major disaster has happened and has lots of news covreage.
