I don't get it.

Just so you guys know, I'm not planning on killing myself, it's just an option my Mom keeps bringing up. I told her that suicide was illegal and she said that's not an excuse...

It takes away a loved one's option to be able to hit you with a newspaper, or call you poop head. :)

First of all, who told you suicide was illegal? How exactly would it be enforced if it was? I've never seen a trial convicting anyone of suicide nor even a trial for attempted suicide. It's not illegal at all, if you are unsuccessful you will be deemed a danger to yourself and probably institutionalized for observation (51-50), but not arrested or charged with a crime.

I never understood that either. It's an indictable offense in Canada (equivalent of felony in the states). So if convicted for suicide, they're going to shove your rotting corpse in prison? I'd feel sorry for the cellmate.

Going to Mimi's answer, you cannot be charged with suicide if it's failed. Attempted suicide varies from state to state, however, and even then, they won't throw you in prison; they'll just sentence you to a lifetime of being in a mental facility.

It is a sin to harm yourself and against the law you have no right to take any ones life much less your own. Your body was a gift and why would you want to harm it . All problems go away in time but death is so final. You own your body it's yours and it's the only one you have so why not treat it like a temple the way god intended you to and. No the government doesn't own you unless your are in the military

Some states it is illegal. That is if you don't survive the attempt. However you are most liking going to be sent to a "Nut House" for a short time to make sure you get help. And if you do succeed then your free and clear!

Suicide is illegal because you do not own you body. The government owns you. Killing someone, including yourself is illegal.

If you are unsuccessful in suicide, you can be arrested and charged.

Its not really illegal but morally its not correct. God is against one taking their own live. Its illegal if you help someone commit suicide though

Suicide is not illegal, attempting suicide or assisting suicide is. If you succeed, you're home free - and dead.

Traditionally Catholic because your body belonged to God.
I read about a woman who threw herself off a building and landed on someone else and killed them - she was sent to prison for manslaughter.

I believe that law comes from religion teachings. In the Bible as well as the Catholic religion it is considered a mortal sin.

Actually it is only the attempt that is illegal, the act is beyond prosecution.
