How old is the console?
If the warranty ran off you can carefully open it and clean it inside.
Use alcohol on a q-tip to clean the lense.
If that doesnt help then maybe the lense needs to be adjusted.
You can find guides on how to do that with the specific PS2 you have (there are different models)
But usually just cleaning the mechanics and lense should do the trick

I have read some of the answers and they are all wrong. This works. i have done it to 3 PS2's so far, and all three work again.

I have to tell you, I found this site, used it, and it worked. You have to follow the directions, and be patient. It may take a few times, but ours reads DVD's agqain, and it never did that.
Go here. and bookmark this site.

Check your disks to make sure that they are undamaged. DO NOT try to repair the PS2; that will only make matters worse. Take it to your local video game shop.

Here, unfortunately, is the correct answer. Unless you have some electronic testing equipment, a soldering gun, diagrams of the electrical hookups, and a new drive, you won't be able to fix it yourself. Frankly, it will cost you as much or more to fix it than to buy a different one. I'd go buy a refurbished or used one.

Hope this helped.

you can either turn it upside down while reading disc...or you can go to the playstation.com web page, and look for repair or something and follow the steps, they will fix it for free or they will send you another refrubished one, but u have to pay for shipping

here is the info:

you have to make sure that everything is clean and does not have any dirt on it or in it because this can cause the laser disk light not to work
