By a treaty signed on Apr. 30, 1803, the United States purchased from France the Louisiana Territory, more than 2 million sq km (800,000 sq mi) of land extending from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains. The price was 60 million francs, about $15 million; $11,250,000 was to be paid directly, with the balance to be covered by the assumption by the United States of French debts to American citizens.

Thomas Jeferson during his 1st term sent Louis and Clark to explore everything to the Pacific and we had more claims to it hence. He sent ambassadors to speak with Napoleon, (who was in the middle of a war), about purchasing just the New Orleans port area, but Napoleon needed the money and Americans bought the whole damn thing for a very small price.

It's where the president of the U.S. (can't think of his name may have been Jefferson or Johnson or something like that) well he bought the Louisiana territory from Napolean Banoparte of France. By Louisiana territory I don't mean Louisiana it was basically like a lot of the Mid-United States.
