Some of the answers so far include teams that made it out of their respective groups! At least i'm assuming you mean teams that didn't make it out of the group stage not the round of 16 etc..?
That's a tough question...but i'd say the Ivory Coast. They played very well against Holland and Argentina. They could have easily tied Argentina and at least deserved to tie Holland...i'm saying this even though i'm a Dutch fan!
Anyway, they were unlucky to be in such a tough group, if they were in almost any other group i think they would have made it to the round of 16.
If the USA had played a better game against the Czech Republic they might have gone on....i also think the Czech's were very inconsistent, played great against the USA and then fell apart without Koller.

...Uh, Brazil & Spain both made it out of their groups. Of the teams that didn't make it out of their groups the US & Czech Republic were the unluckiest. Part of their bad luck was just being in that hellish group in the first place.

The Ivory Coast was good enough to make it in the Round of 16, but they got stuck in the Group of Death with Argentina and the Netherlands. :P That's the definition of tough luck at the World Cup.

It looks like a lot of people don't comprehend the question.
I think Costa Rica should have made it out of their group. They were unfortunate to be in the same group with Germany and that Ecuador came on like gangbusters.
To Michael E: The USA didn't score against Italy. Italy scored for them.

USA!, we have lots of weapons, we are stronger than anyone else on earth (and maybe the whole Universe)... I don't know why we only sent 23 soldiers to the world cup. Bruce Arena should have called for Air support, the Air Force base was nearby...
Bruce Arena will be replaced by a new General...

Either USA or Czech Republic ... they were both in a horrible group - Ivory Coast was also unlucky.
-Let me point out that if Italy shuts out France, the US will be the only team to have scored on Italy, and the only team not to lose to them.

I'd say the czechs are the best team that didn't advance. Don't know if luck is the problem, either they were in a tough group or they didn't take Ghana seriously enough.

Mexico, they played horribly during the 16ths, but on the 8ths they were awesome, too bad they had to play Argentina (who by the way was really bad, but got off one of the coolest goals in the cup so far)
