Maybe they like people to read their stuff and find that some posters on public forums are read more than others do to reasons like gender for example....I guess those people love attention and want to be heard.

Misleading avatars, meaning the cartoon ones? There are only so many configurations to choose from. Or are you talking about the photos of inanimate objects and animals and symbols? Probably lots of people feel that those represent themselves more completely than a mere photo. Or are you talking about the people who put up avatars that are meant to mislead you? I guess they're hiding who they really are for some reason, as many reasons as there are misleading avatars. Don't believe every avatar you see!

Well, mine is a tad misleading since I am older then the avatar appears. But there just wasn't an option for me to make it more realistic.

It's probably not done on purpose. After all, there isn't a huge selection of avatars. You can't pick thick or thin or short or tall. You usually just make it the closest you can. For some, maybe it's who the want to be or who they think you want them to be. I think avatars are all done in fun and to fit a mood.

I created this one yesterday. It is pure fantasy. It would be fun to change your appearance whenever and however you felt like it. I can't do it in real life, but I can with my avatar.

Wait, I just put one up. That wasn't hard at all. Actually mine is decently accurate except my eyes aren't that freakishly huge.
