The Macpherson strut is just a big gas charged shock with a coil spring over the outside of the shock. Normally no other damping is required.

The MacPherson strut IS the damper, and "sits " inside the coil spring. Sometimes they can be a little tricky to remove when they need replacing. The coil spring surrounding the strut has to be removed , by clamping and then the nut at the top can be un done in order to replace the faulty strut

MacPherson-type struts are manufactured by all major shock/strut companies. The most common struts/shocks used by car manufacturers worldwide are Bilsteins.

Two good makes are Koni or Spax. The Koni's are a bit more expensive but can be adjusted on the car I think.
