For a teenage girl anything by Meg Cabot. Even though she is in her thirties she gets inside the heads of teenage girls and relates to the everyday problems they face. The Princess Diaries series is the best (they are nothing like the movies). Also the Georgia Nicolson series by Louise Rennison is hilarious. I literally had to stop reading at times b/c I was laughing so hard. Even though the books take place in England there are some similar experiences and a British-English dictionary is provided at the back of each book to help decipher the slang. The A-List novels are perfecty for girls who follow trends and are similar (and a bit better) to the Gossip Girl Series. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants books are both teenager and parent friendly. Two of my favorite books are Sloppy Firsts and Second Helpings by Megan McCafferty. My sister always enjoyed reading Sara Dessen (a lot of her books have been made into movies ex. How to Deal)
Boys are a little tougher. There is always the classic J.R.R. Tolkien books, although I found the Lord of the Rings a little wordy and could never really get into them. Boys always tend to enjoy science fiction. For boys who are not willing readers try books that have been made into movies so they have the incentive of watching the movie afterwards to make comparisions (ex. i Robot by Isaac Asimov). For those who may be interested in science or history anything by Michael Criton is excellent. I recently read and loved jurassic Park and Timeline is one of my all time favorite books.

Sarah Dessen writes great books. (I love The Truth About Forever.) Other authors I'd recommend are Sonya Sones, Laurie Halse Anderson, Louise Rennison, and Scott Westerfeld. Saving Francesca by Melina Marchetta is a great book.
Looking for Alaska is a great book by John Green
Try looking at the BBYA (Best Books For Young Adults), Quick Picks For Reluctant Readers, and Alex Awards compiled by the American Library Association.

I've heard of Megan McCafferty books, they're supposed to be good. I never read them myself but I heard they were good. Enough for Kaavya Viswanathan to copy after. ":{. So, try McCafferty's books Sloppy Firsts, Seconds Helpings, and Charmed Thirds. I believe they are for the most part PG. And anything young adult by Meg Cabot is good. Try the Princess Diary series, The Mediator series, and the 1-800-MISSING series. Those are good, and her new book, Queen of Babble. Check that out. And American Girl, that was funny. There's also a fantasy series for young adults by DJ McHale, the Pendragon series, if you've heard of them. Check them out. And there's Holly Black's tithe, which is for mature readers. Happy reading.

Try the classics: Jules Verne books, treasure island, Robinson Crusoe, the man and the sea, to kill a mocking bird, Huckleberry Finn, the metamorphosis... It depends on the kids taste. Does he like suspense, drama, comedy?
The lord of the rings, Harry Potter...
Try Shakespeare, Kafka, Jorge Luis Borge, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Anton Chejov...

My favorite book, which isn't really a teen book, is Wicked by Gregory Maguire. I'm 13 though, and I love it. I also like Enders Game series by Orson Scott Card.

My daughter has been enjoying a series by Melody Carlson called True Colors.
I'd stay away from Gossip Girls, as the first thing on the back of the book says it is "Sex in the City for teens", Yuk.
