Vocals used in singing are trained, and vocal training uses very specific intonations (choral exercises, for example) that are not used in speech. Some don't however. I've heard many a vocalist from Great Britain or Australia (David Bowie, Mick Jagger, Midnight Oil, Men at Work) who sound just like the countries they came from.

Probably depends on the person, and how real the accents are- could also be their singing teachers, if they dont have an accent and are teaching the person who does, then the person who does is going to try and sing like their teacher who doesnt.

I've noticed that as well.Robbie Williams is a good example.He tries to sing in an American accent

the vocal cords are a muscle that over years of regular levels of vocalization become trained to the particular accent or dialect ,the flexing and vibrating of the cords at an intense rate operate the cords at an unfamiliar level thereby eliminating trained dialect

I always figured that they took voice lessons to get rid of the accents, like actors from other countries.

Alot of British/Irish/Wales/Aussie singers do but some singers dont..like country and western singers still sound twangy to me..and some Brits still let their sounds thru if ya listen closely.. =)

because when you sing you sing only pure vowel sounds.... accents are on the twang of the vowel... so therefore, no twangs on vowels no accents...

OMG...I have always wondered that! Also, why someone who stutters does not stutter when they sing.
