Why don't whites from American call themselves European? Cause that's not where they are from. If you are from the West Indies, you aren't African. If you are from America, you aren't African. You are American. They probably feel that way more than blacks in America because of some social reason that I dont' know the answer to but would love to find out about.

Ok...this is what my Moroccan roomate once told me: That here in America people tend to associate the word African with the word black. My friend always got irritated with this because she thought this philosophy ignores the fact that there are many races of people in the African continent.
I know this doesn't answer your question...but its an example of a different view into the subject.

Because the original inhabitants of the west Indies were Amerindian, descended from native Americans and Caribbeans. http://www.iacd.oas.org/Interamer/Interamerhtml/Alleynehtml/AllCh2.htm Good Luck !

Well, technically, you're not African, unless you were born in Africa. My grandfather was born in Lithuania, but I am not Lithuanian, as I was born in U.S.A., so I am American. My great grandmother was born in Poland, but I am not Polish...I am American. Perhaps those folks born in the West Indies have a national pride and do not wish to trace their ancestry in order to have an identity. Also, people don't usually "self-identify" according to a continent, but according to a nation on that continent.
Does that help?

Im a West Indian-American. I don't know where you get this idea that we don't belive that we are from Africa but you have to understand that the most recent culture is going to be the one that is nearest and dearest to our hearts.
All humans originated from Africa so why not ask a random white guy why he rejects the idea of being from Africa?

Err...because they aren't?
Being of African descent (aka "black") does not equal being African. The stupid and politically correct term of "african-american" is only used in the US. The rest of the world refers to black people as black people.
Black West Indians are just that... black West Indians.

Most people tend to identify with the cultural they are most familiar with. For a person to consider themselves African and know nothing about the culture or way of life is pointless; wouldn't you agree?
