I'm spending a few days in San Francisco and thinking about driving down to Santa Cruz and staying overnight. A quick look on TripAdvisor shows some terrible reviews of hotels in the area. Are there any decent ones, preferably under $150 and (although I'd pay $200 for something really nice)? Thanks!

There is nothing to do in Santa Cruz unless you are a surfer. Save your money. Stay in San Francisco and do a day trip out of it. See the famous Santa Cruz boardwalk and drive back to SF after seeing it.

Try Chamminade its in the hills above Santa Cruz.

It's a deluxe hotel built on the grounds of an old Monastery. They have great views of the whole Monterey bay. 2 great Restaurants on the property, and you should be able to get a room for no more than $150.00.

Its really nice. Unlike most hotels in the Santa Cruz area.

I just checked their web site its at www.chaminade.com. They also have a toll free number 1-800-283-6569.

Its a great place your close to everything yet it seems miles away.

Another suggestion would be the Scotts Valley Hilton. I've stayed there a couple of times, but really liked Chaminade much better. It may be called something else now.

There are several. Seascape Resort in Aptos (15 min. drive from Santa Cruz) is excellent www.seascaperesort.com. $150 might be tight there...but worth checking. Seacliff Inn (seacliffinn.com) is also perfectly OK. Also in Aptos; 5 min, drive. Hilton in Scotts Valley is fine.

Here's an idea: I live near Boulder Creek Country Club, 25 min. north of Santa Cruz in the redwoods, which rents villas on the golf course. $150 might get a one bedroom. Really nice, peaceful, beautiful scenery, 5 min. from spectacular Big Basin State Park. 831-338-2111. The drive from there to Santa Cruz along Hwy 9 is scenic.

Best western capitola inn (in nearby Capitola; I stayed there for 2 nights and it was lovely; breakfast, not so much)

Another option: Hilton Santa Cruz
