Usually i carry 40 or 50 bucks. No more because if i get mugged, it won't hurt as much losing a small bit of cash. If you live in a small city then carry as much as you think you need for that day only. Do the rest of your spending with debit/credit card.

I never have cash, maybe $1.00 in change for printing. Everything else is checkcard.
My Dad is oldschool he always has like $100 cash in his wallet...Good old dad, always has money for me. Sweet guy.
Before I had a bank account when I was a teen more like $20. I don't have a ton of cash on hand because I came from a rough town, always affraid of being mugged, and when the money is gone, it's gone. Not like travelers checks.
