Did you know about the Colossal Squid? These are even bigger than giant squid. A complete specimen was found in 2003. Before that they only had some tentacles which they used to classify them in like the 1920's. Very few people know about these cousins to the giant squid. I think its not so much the difference in water pressure responsible for never catching a live giant squid but more because of the tremendous depths at which they live that people have a hard time getting down to.

well, the fact that they have no bones, would allow them to survive at any pressure really. I think it may be due mostly to our lack of knowledge on their biology and behavior that leads to their abrupt death in captivity. We still have no real idea about how they behave in the wild and what they eat, how they breed and where they even spend most of their time. I think that instead of sending monkeys into space we should be spending the time researching things here on earth like this for example. I think that the mystery of the giant squid will eventually be resolved and once it is, we will eventually see them in aquariums all around the world. This would be unfortunate because they are a spectacular animal, and when something this large has eluded man kinds grip for so long, it doesnt deserve to be locked up anyways! Good Question!

Some scientists believe that giant squids that find themselves in warm water lose their buoyancy system and can't get back down. Also their blood may carry less oxygen when warm. They have been observed on the surface and escaped alive; but perhaps the water was cold. BTW, the ocean is very cold around the entire earth at any great depth (perhaps 600 feet or more) because cold water suplied by the poles can not surface unless warm water moves away to make room.

The giant squids are intelligent. More intelligent even than humans, possibly. They are hidden because they want to be.

Except that they can often mimic those conditions in a lab setting. Maybe the stress of capture is just too much.

it is very possible it is because of the pressure change
