The Rooster is the nickname of guitarist Jerry Cantrell's father from when he was in Vietnam. It's all about the Vietnam war through the eyes of a soldier.
Ain't Found A Way To Kill Me Yet
Eyes Burn With Stinging Sweat
Seems Every Path Leads Me To Nowhere
Wife And Kids And Household Pet
Army Green Was No Safe Bet
The Bullets Scream To Me From Somewhere
Here They Come To Snuff The Rooster
Yeah Here Come The Rooster
You Know He Ain't Gonna Die
Walkin' Tall Machine Gun Man
They Spit On Me In My Homeland
Gloria Sent Me Pictures Of My Boy
Got My Pills 'Gainst Mosquito Death
My Buddy's Breathin' His Dyin' Breath
Oh God Please Won't You Help Me Make It Through
I like how they contrast the way soldiers are depicted in Vietnam and America. In Vietnam, they are feared. They are tall, machine gun men. In America, however, they are treated poorly, as people here didn't approve of the war. This is such a great song, and once you know the background, the rest of the song makes sense.
I don't particularly think that it's anti-war or not. I think it is mostly just about what is going through the soldiers minds. In each verse, all the lines paint a picture of the war, except for one line that contrasts that image with the image of the family and the pet that he left behind. When they try to "snuff" the rooster, that's the enemy shooting at him, and trying to kill him. But, as the song says, he ain't gonna die.
Bye the way, AIC's Dirt CD, which this song is from, is one of the greatest rock albums of all time, and everyone who doesn't own it should go out and buy it. Don't download it. This CD is worth paying for.

Army green was no safe bet
The bullets scream to me from somewhere
Here they come to snuff the rooster
Yeah here come the rooster
You know he ain't gonna die
Walkin' tall machine gun man
They spit on me in my home land
Gloria sent me pictures of my boy
