There are many reasons for the White House to soften its line. For one, the administration wants to focus on its impending war on Iraq--and doesn’t want another military conflict to distract it.
Another problem for the White House is that the alternative to a shooting war--United Nations sanctions--would likely be vetoed by Russia or China. China is North Korea’s closest ally, and it fears that more pressure on the teetering North Korean economy would drive a new wave of hungry refugees to join the thousands who have already crossed the border into China.
Bush offered direct talks with the North on January 7, 2006 reversing his previous demand that Kim renounce any nuclear programs before negotiations could begin.
They can't and won't act unless they can blackmail russia into agreement with UN actions. This is what Bushie is working on, he said so in a press conference today in fact.
So, I think backing off is the right idea. Unless we want to live a very different lifestyle than we do now, one of constant war and paranoia.

We should have handled them a long time ago. An attack on a sovereign nation (Iraq) just further fueled their excuse for building up an arsenal.
Now that China and Russia are backing them, we are in quite a pickle.
I personally believe that North Korea is just a spoiled child whining for attention. I would move foward with the sanctions and continue to work on global support. They are actually YEARS away from true nuke capabilities (although they like to pretend different).

uh... korea has nukes... and I'm not so sure China would back that horse in today's world (especially a crazy horse)... this isn't the 50s and a lot has changed...
and a war would basically mean a draft... which would have zero public support... it would take a year to start and by the time it all started... the elections would wipe out everyone in office and the new guys would stop it...

Just one thing, I hope China does not back up N Korea. They should know better than to help someone who is testing nuclear weapons. PLus, I dont care for the interdependence, I just want peace between China and the USA

I hope that the U.S. does whatever the U.N. decides. This needs to be a world decision. I don't see them as an immidiate threat. From the looks of the success they had testing their so called missles we had better missile cababilities back in 1959. I say ignore the little pot bellied dog eater he seems to thrive on attention. I just read some of the things he has said about himself like the first time he played 18 holes of golf he had 11 holes in one! lmao

North Korea needs to be spanked and given a time out - they are just spoiled that they do not have USA's attention - they are throwing a temper-tantrum because of our attention to the Middle East situation.
They should remember not to piss us off when we are busy with other country's issues - keep it up North Korea and we'll light up your sky like the Fourth of July!

We know how to handle communists regimes. Cash usually keeps them put. It's the fanatical muslim dictators that are unpredictable.
