No-one is absolutely certain, but there are two main theories.
The first, and most likely, is that it comes from the phrase "to play for the love of the game" (that is, to play for nothing). This is the origin of "love" that is favoured by the authorative Oxford English Dictionary.
The other theory, although there is no actual proof of this one, is due to the simimilarity of a zero to an egg. Because the sport originated in France ( in fact, "tennis" is itself derived from the French word "tenez", meaning "hold it" or " "see what you can do with that!"), it is often assumed that the french word for an egg (L'oueuf, which is pronunced "lerff") was used as the symbol for a score of zero. But this theory is probably just a popular myth.

I bet it means that if you weren't fond of (as in 'love') the scoreless person playing you, you would bother playing them any more. But then that is akin to the idea that you (the scoreless person) are obviously merely playing for the love of the game, not because you are competitively good at it. I've heard it was because there was some corruption of French phrasing, but I don't know French and what I've heard was a corruption of Latin (no wonder the French are a mess).
