I recently bought a .177 caliber remington airrifle and it works ok at shooting squirrels and birds but it takes atleast 2 shots to kill a chipmunk and atleast 3 to kill a squirrel. I know i'm not shooting it on the wrong places because I shot a squirrel i in the chest a few times and it was still alive. Then I shot a bird and it acted dead but when I went up to it, it just walked away. Couldn't fly though. I was doing research and someone said "I switched to a .22 caliber pellet gun because it is better to hunt with." Should I switch to a .22 caliber pellet gun? Will it really make a difference?

The 177 Remington is intended for target practice. I don't know the velocity of the pellet but it is too low to deliver substantial energy to your target.

I kill things just fine with a Sheridan Blue Streak that has a 900 fpm pellet that is 177. The problem with it is that it is a smoothbore so its accuracy is wanting.

First try hitting it on the side of the head. A small caliber bb gun can knock out a person ahen shot there. If that doesn't work switch to a .22.

Your son violated 4 of the significant concepts of firearm protection he replaced into taught at Hunter education. continually treating a gun as if it were loaded, under no circumstances aspect it at someone, continually keep the muzzle pointed in a secure route, and do not insert your finger into the tirgger until eventually waiting to hearth. inspite of what replaced into contained in the barrel - pellet, rock, airborne dirt and mud bunny, Elvis - it merely does not count number. there is not any excuse. That he completely bypassed each and every of the significant protection regulations, really after being taught - potential he's not to be depended on with any type of firearm. he's of route too immature to understand the outcome of his moves - and until eventually he learns to 'get it' should not be depended on with a lot of a few thing for awhile. Take the pellet gun away until eventually next summer season and 'revisit' his alternatives of the previous year. he's 13 now, has been through hunter protection - and failed badly. In 2 years whe will be able to get a learner's allow for a vehicle and commence motorcar protection classes - he needs to understand the consiquences of his moves ....... previously he receives in the back of a wheel and kills someone. I don't know about caliber wise, I do know that a powerful double barrel pellet gun would do the trick.

Probably not enough power with your shot. .177 is plenty big enough to kill any small bird or squirel.
