Bettas are about the only fish suitable for a bowl because of their ability to get oxygen from the surface as well as their low oxygen needs. Goldfish are one of the worst specimens for a bowl, they don't usually last long and they are a HUGE amount of work. If you want to keep your betta with other fish, find a small tank(about 10 gallons) and you can put him with several peaceful fish like tetras and platties. They are colorful and usually pretty hardy. If your mom won't let you have a tank because she thinks it will be too much work, she could discover that a filtered tank is much less work than a bowl. It keeps your fish healthier too.

NONE A bowl is bad for a betta alone. That bowl has limited surface area and volume. Meaning high waste and low oxygen. Why is a tank not allowed. Surely a 5 or 10 gallon tank is not expensive and is simple to maintain. With that, i would reccommend ONE betta, a few shrimp and some pygmy cories.

Goldfish are HORRIBLE for bowls. They are kept in 1000s of gallons of water in PONDS. Compare that to the average 1/2 gallon bowl. EVen fancy goldfish need 15 gallons per fish, and commons need 100s. Common goldfish get to over 2 feet, while fancies to over 6 inches. They are also incredibly messy, and have huge oxygen requirements. Above all they are not compattible with you betta

Finally, you say 2 bettas. Are they in seperate bowls. If not, seperate immediatly. The 5 gal i mentioned is ok for 2 bettas if divided. a male and a male will kill each other. A male and a female will kill the female. A female and a female is ok, but a bit risky

I think they're fairly aggressive and will kill anything in a small tank with them.

If you're going to have bettas with another type of fish (or even a male with a female) you need a good sized tank with lots of hiding spots so the other fish can escape.

Why not get another bowl for goldfish?

Well many fish can live in a bowl, but not with betta because they are aggresive. So you could get a gold fish or some small fish at a pet store to put in a separate bowl.

Well many fish can live in a bowl together, but a Beta can only live by it's self. You might try to to get another bowl and put gold fish or some kind of other fish in it

Hi,
A betta won't tolerate another fish. You could get a divided tank.
I'm not sure how difficult it would be to find one. I'm sure they probably have divided bowls too.
You can keep a couple of goldfish in a bowl. There are so many pretty goldfish. They're more active than bettas too.
Good luck!

Betta fish only fight with each other. I would try white cloud minnows or zebra danios... temperature doesn't affect them as much as other fish. Make sure to clean half the bowl water at least once a week using a siphon to clean the gravel.

It's cruel to have any fish living in a bowl with unfiltered and unaerated water. This includes bettas. That's equivalent to you living in a closet in your own feces with no clean air.

Live with your mom's decision. Anything else would be cruel to those poor fish you subject those horrible conditions to.
