I want to plan a trip from SF to LA - anyone have any leads on where I can go to get a reputable vessel and some instruction along the way?

Honestly, if you are just venturing into sailing, that's an ambitious trip to start... and getting instructions along the way is a tough way to learn. Effective, but tough.
It may be better to start at a sailing school, maybe do some charters, sail as crew with other people, before you make the commitment of your own boat

Call boat charter companies and see it anyone has a vesseel that's making the trip, then ask if you can 'crew' for free, or a small fee. Read a lot before you go, and hang out at the local marina. People who love sailing also love talking about it, and you'll pick up "pearls" of information, if you'll just listen. Don't even think of a trip like that alone, for your first outing without making me your beneficiary.

Yes, much better to get sailing lessons local till you are prepared for such an ambitious cruise. Then assuming you don't have your own boat or can't buy one even with some friends, you might try joining a sailing club where qualified folks can rent boats, or thru such clubs you can participate in events where you probably can sail with some other folks making that trip.

Are you going to buy a boat? How much do you want to spend on a boat.. ? How much sailing experience do you have? I would really need more info to help you.

Do you own a boat? You can contract with a licensed Captain for the trip but it won't be cheep...
