Ferrets will always retain a musky smell(even after descenting procedures have been done),because their bodies produce an oil to retain a healthy coat of fur. They DO make a shampoo especially for ferrets,(that has a pleasant fresh smell to it ,that will last about a week). There are several other shampoo products on the market, that are safe to use on them also, but please be sure to read the label on the back to assure it's listing includes ferrets,(larger pet store chains will be your best bet for locating the product you are looking for ,or your local vet clinic can order it for you).Ferrets, can be a great joy to their owners, and be quite content in their surroundings,if "their ",well being is taken into consideration, with proper care and accomodations. You will find your pet won't be near as "aromatic",if you give it a large enough confinement to allow an area with a woven wire floor, and a large tray (try one of those inexpensive trays they make for a washing machine...around $5.00 at a hardware store)slid underneath, and lined with several layers of newspapers,or cat litter.(This allows for the droppings to drop through the floor ,away from the animals "living quarters",thereby keeping it away from where it sleeps and plays)Small receiving blankets in a box, make a nice retreat for them,as would a "hammock",fashioned from denim,or another medium weight cloth, and suspended from the ceiling of the cage.To maintain the oder free existance you hope for, is all but impossible, but by cleaning the tray in the morning, and evening, and changing the blankets, daily, and bathing the animal, twice a month..you should find a substantial difference in the results.Good Luck RhajhaRhoze

1. Ferrets should be descented when you buy them. If they are not, you should have it done
2. Overbathing a ferret is bad, it can make them sell worse. If you want to clean them to try to keep the stink down, buy kitten cleaning wipes
3. Wash their bedding 1 x a week
4. Ferrets should never be 'set free' they are a long, long long way from the wild and no longer have the skill sets to survive.
5. Bathe them them about every 6 weeks in the summer and every 2 months in the winter.
6. Ferrets will always have a musky odor, that is their nature. They are a member of the weasel.skunk family. If you can't handle the smell, please take your ferret to a rescue so that someone like me who rescues abandoned ferrets can rehab them and get them to a ferret friendly family.

Keep thier cage clean, but that won't stop the ferret itself from stinkning that will just keep the smell down. You have to give thems baths too. But the only way to really get rid of the smell of a ferret is to go to the vet and get it descented. What they do is take out certian glands that produce the smell. It can be expesive, but it is worth it.

1. Do not bathe them too much! Maybe once or twice a year if they really need it. Baths strip them of natural oils and thier body has to work overtime to replace them which makes them stinkier.
2. Feed them high quality food! Poor quality food makes their poop stink. And if the food has too much fish in it then they will stink like it. You want a food that is high in animal protien and fat. Use this chart to choose a couple of brands of food: http://everythingfert.proboards36.com/index.cgi?board=kristen&action=display&thread=1109195167 . Any food that rates a 1 or 2 is wonderful!
3. Keep the litter boxes clean.
4. Wash their bedding often.
5. Keep those ears clean! They can get pretty stinky!

Keep them outdoors, in a large enclosure, a long way from your house.
Ferrets smell. If you can't bear it, get some toy ones instead!
