In my comedy routine I have a bit about men having ears with doors like submarines...picture them slamming shut and turning that little wheel that makes them water tight... that warning siren is going off and that booming voice inside your head is going off...DIVE! DIVE! DIVE!
That was the set up, here's the explanation: You have that response because a stay at home mom doesn't get the decompression time of a commute. She doesn't get to switch gears and she'll often jabber at you the way she would one of the younger kids or speak in the clipped efficient tones she would use if arranging to have the dryer repaired.
Unless you have an older child to give your wife a half hour to herself before you come home it will continue to be like this for a few years. We all go through it. You'll survive. However, another novel approach is that you entertain your offspring for half an hour so she can have a cup of tea and flip through a magazine after you get home. If you're a real sport, draw a bath for her, pour her a glass of wine and give her an entire hour!
P.S. Don't any of you hacks even think about stealing the sub bit. I can prove when I wrote it and I will sue your a** off if it turns up in your act!

That's precisely the problem with most men. They tend to tune out their significant others, instead of listening and trying to find a solution together.
If you can't stop tuning out, at least agree to go to counseling with your wife and see if you can get help from a third party to resolve your differences.
Who knows, the counselor could take your side and make your wife realize that she could bring up issues in a different manner. On the other hand, you could also come to a better realization about the issues your wife may have with you.

You may be tuning out because you've heard it before. Many women repeat themselves over and over until they believe they've been heard.
The only way I know is to totally stop whatever you are doing. Look directly at her eyes and say nothing. Resist the temptation to butt in. Let her finish. Then respond in way that does not lead to more chatter.

having recently gone through a phase of tuning out when my partner is talking I can assure you this is not a purely male problem.
I did realise that when this was happening there were a few things happening
1) I was under a lot of personal stress
2) My partner was speaking quietly
3) there was a lot of sensory distraction
my solution to this horrid problem was to turn off the tv... put aside my laptop.... make us both a coffee and sit facing him while he talked...

for several reasons :1- you're not interested in what she is saying 2- she speaks too much 3- you are too tired and sleepy4- you are too ignorant (as most men are )5-you are watching TV or listening to the radio or something else6-you are not used to listen to the others (this is common for those who are not used to listen to their mothers, brothers or sisters)

omg, that's the trouble with you men, you never listens!!!!!
Love, like rain, can nourish from above, drenching couples with a soaking joy. But sometimes, under the angry heat of life, love dries on the surface and must nourish from below, tending to its roots, keeping itself alive.
