i worked at kragens and work on cars sometimes. volkswagens are like the first to break down all the time. and my co-worker bought one. she has problems. anyone with them has problems. a good car for a teenages***hence they do not have a good job*** should get a low maintenence car *honda/toyote/nissan
check the consumer reports. YOU WILL SEE ALL THIS INFORMATION I SAY backed up. you will see RAW DATA. and when i worked at the automotive shop? 80% of the frequent customers owned this german brand name car. jetta/bug etc.
good luck.

No, I think a Volkswagen Beetle is NOT a good first car for a teen because the maintenance costs can be a bit high. Please consider a Toyota Corolla (as early as '93 to the present) or, if you must, a Honda. I had a '93 Corolla that I took to 237,000-plus miles and it STILL RAN strong. The body was falling apart and it was an eyesore but that car NEVER let me down. God bless Toyota.
No matter what kind of vehicle you get the better you maintain it the better it will treat you. Change the oil faithfully every 3,000 miles (or whatever the manufacturer recommends; some newer vehicles recommend every 6,000 miles). It's a simple thing but that simple thing alone will carry you a long way. Oh, and save for those more expensive maintenance items, like the timing belt and water pump. For some cars, it's recommended you replace those at 60,000 miles or so. Do it. It may seem pricey but it's better than being stranded on a freeway or somewhere in the middle of nowhwere. Finally, invest in a good jack, not just the one that comes with car, and INSIST on a regular-sized spare, NOT a cheater spare.
Sincerely,
Uncle Experience

WARNING! In 2000, I bought a brand new beetle volkswagen and once the warranty was up I experienced HUGE problems...for the next several years I had nothing but headaches. I put close to $7k into the car and it was only 3 years old! In addition, all my friends hated to sit in the back of the car because their heads will hit the ceiling if you go over bumps when you drive. If I were you I would look into the your state's consumer affairs website and see how many complaints there are against the year car you are looking to buy. This way you will have a little more knowledge as to what you are getting into. Yes, the beetle is super cute to look at but when you own one it can be a whole'nother story....Right now, I drive a Santa Fe by Hyundai and I find it just as cute (if not cuter) and it will be two years in October and I have had no problems-yay!Good luck with whatever you decide.

No. It's overpriced. You have to be careful merely to park the thing without tearing the bumper fascia to pieces. Its reliability rating ain't the greatest. Plenty of other cars with the same mileage or better.
My suggestion would be if you were buying from the current market, to buy a small car from Toyota, Honda or Mazda. They all have great reliability and last a good, long time and can be fun to drive. One other car that generally considered that is absolutely great is the Chevy Cobalt, which I drove for about six months as a company car. With a few nice accessories, that car is a blast! Great handling, nice interior, comfortable(I'm betting at my 6'2" that I'm bigger than you are, so. . .), and just a very friendly car all around.
Hope this helps.

I would say yes. They are cute and fun and from what I have heard reliable. I'm not sure about the miles per gallon, but I can't imagine the VW being a gas hog.
FYI - Get a Convertible!
On a side note. I think that is wonderful you are showing such initiative to save so early for something you really want. Good Luck and drive carefully and don't forget to wear your seat belt!

I had one of these and I thought it was good on fuel until I got a toyota corolla s- the corolla gets great fuel economy and has more room too. The beetle can go about 220-250 miles on a tank of gas (12 gallons) but the corolla seems to go further (bigger tank?) and I dont have to refuel as often. I'd reconsider if I were you.....Good luck.

I have the limited edition cyber green turbo and I love it to death!! Its a very safe car and gets great mileage. It looks all small from the outside but Ive had men 6'4 in my car before comfortably. i think it would be a great first car-it's stylish and affordable. Im not so excited about the convertiable though.....first cars need to be hard tops for safetys sake.

The newer ones are a little out of a teenager's price range, but an older one with low miles in fair condition is a great car for a young driver. Not too powerful to handle, smooth driving, fuel efficient, everything you'd be looking for!
