I was always scared. My pediatrician told me six months, but it can still happen up to a year. After six months it takes a dramatic decrease in the chance. But all in all the first four months is when you have to be careful. Lay them on their back and let them sleep with a pacifer. If they are to roll over the pacy will keep their nose from being covered. allowing them to breath.

It occurs mostly between 2 and 4 months. I worry about it also. I make sure my daughter is breathing n the middle of the night. I always put her on her back to sleep. I also read somewhere that using a pacifier could also decrease the risk of SIDS.

SIDS risk is highest between 2 and 4 months old, drops further after 6 months of age, and is *gone* entirely by a year old.

I think the first answerer was a bit confused ur talking about sids as in after ur bub is born not miscarriage. the first six months the risk is highest then it drops by 50% then at 12 months it drops again but its still worth being dilligent about it till they are like 5. just sleep them on their backs, (when they can roll its ok just put them to bed on their backs if they roll they roll.) never expose them to ciggarett smoke, dont smoke in the house or car. dont use pillows or heavy doonas in a cot. put them to bed with their feet near the end of the cot so they dont slip under the blankets. dont put teddies or comforters in a cot, or cot bumpers. there is some evidence a dummy can lower the risk sids in the first 12 months but if ur not usuing one dont start for that reason they r a pain still lol. good luck tho.

We worry because we're good Mom's- the person who said we're stupid for asking on-line like this doesn't realize that we ask MANY people and search for answers in MANY places- Doc's, Family, Friends and even on-line places like this. So don't listen to them.
Pray for your little one, keep them close, in a bassinet if you can so you can wake to check on them when you feel you need to w/o exhausting yourself. I've heard that once the baby can hold themselves up you are at a lower risk, but no one knows exactly what causes SIDS or we'd stop doing that thing! I read a study that showed in England, SIDS went down significantly when babies stopped getting vaccines before 3 months of age. They can't prove anything, but it's a strong enough correlation to make me consider waiting. I'll pray for your little one when I pray for mine. God Bless You!

It happens most during the first 2-6 months of life, but can happen as late as 12 months and rarely as late as 24 months. Worrying is the right thing to do in this situation. It will ensure that you take the necessary precautions to try to prevent it.
Good luck!
