Usually people think they can do something themselves because " how hard can it really be? "
*sigh*
they end paying TWICE as much because they pay to get the materials to do it, screw it up, have to call a professional who charges them to fix what they screwed up and then do it correctly.
mentally incompetent sums it up pretty well.

I personally enjoy doing most home improvements. Sometimes it does end up costing about $100 bucks to change that faucet washer along with twelve trips to the hardware store. Then I do feel mentally incompetent. Usually things turn out good and I feel good about saving money by doing it myself! It really is fun if that's the type of thing you think you might enjoy. You may surprise yourself as to how competent you actually are, even for first time projects.

Nonsense. A reasonably capable DIY is capable of doing many improvements, The trick is to know your limitations and abilities. Ask questions, take the time to learn. Hire a professional when in doubt.
I have hired many so-called "professionals". Many are no better than DIY. To compare a doctor with 12 years of education to a carpenter is truly bold - and totally incorrect.
For every competent contractor, you will have at least 5 who are marginal and other 10 who are incompetent.

No Way!! My dad likes to the whole home improvement thing, especially outdoors. He's definitely not mentally incompetent- he can always explain something super-complicated in a way that makes sense. He's really good at home-improvement, too.

I blame this on home improvement type television shows which make things look easy. Home improvement stores are just as bad. If home repairs were as simple as they "seemed" like they were going to be, construction workers wouldn't make $25 plus an hour. Unfortunately, homeowners learn the incorrect way to do things and then when they call a pro to fix it, they constantly second guess the pro, because he is not doing it like they showed on TV. That's annoying and makes many quality carpenters reluctant to do remodels and they stick to new construction only.

Home improvement is generally taken on by men, who seldom research or ask how to do something properly....so yes, I guess you're right
