Because their music is sampled, unoriginal, and repetitive. Their lyrics are repetitive and profane.

Some of the early rap was decent, but the more recent stuff is non-creative, non-ground breaking repetitive junk with too much bass.

Pink Floyd's rock operas and the Beatles' pop standards will be listened to a hundred years from now. Current hip hop? HAHA, no way.

They may never be legends, but they do have all the dough!

I'll also clarify between the Hip Hop I'm about to slam. I think the question is aimed (hopefully) at prefrabricated hip hop that is nothing more than mixed beats and someone singing or rapping stupidity, but I would also include in this the radio princesses and boy bands that are just as prefabricated as the rest of them. I'm not talking of Wu-Tang or the Fugees or Les Nubians or those who have outlasted and grown out of the stereotype.

Legendary bands have these little things called lyrics, lyrics that span the test of time, lyrics that evoke emotion and read as history. Most hip hop has token chorus lines, repeated over and over, with very little to say beyond a voice to go with a dance beat. In hip hop, sometimes it's not what you say, but how many times you say it and how sexy or cool you say it, but it's about relaxing, dancing, moving your body, not so much about moving your mind.

These few legendary bands are great storytellers, granted, while mainstream hip hop is momentary ejaculation. But legendary bands don't speak to us all, and to be honest, I don't see how they ever will. We live in such a culturally diverse world, and the words of dead white boys, to be harsh, is not going to inspire everyone. We have Jimi Hendrix, we have Bob Marley, we have Santana ....... we have more than the Beatles, Pink Floyd, the Stones.

Open your mind, and realize that these legendary bands have been around forever because they started in a time when hip hop didn't even exist.

I just love close-minded idiots.

Time will tell if any Hip Hop artists will become legends. Great Hip Hop artists that would be condsidered for Legend status (in my opinion) are A Tribe Called Quest, Blackalicious and Spear Head...Amazingly intelligent and talented artists all of them and their music is all either very uplifting or contains some very serious social commentary.

Not all Hip Hop artists and rappers make music that is profane or about drugs, gangs, bitches or any of dozens of negative stereotypes people pin on them. And yes there is a big difference between Hip Hop and Rap

Open your minds people.

EDIT: The close-minded idiots I'm talking about are those who are making silly comments after they've heard one or two hip hop songs. I'll also admit that much of the "Pop" Hip Hop and Rap today is pretty bad...but so are the "pop" Girl/boy bands, "pop" Alt rock, "pop" metal, etc. You need to get below the surface to find the good stuff and it is out there.

For the same reason Boy Bands wont ever be legends.....they are a dime a dozen, they suck, and its a niche market. Like boy bands, they are marketed to young people, based not on the quality of the music, but on how much bling they can sell to the kids buying the crap up like hotcakes, or based upon how thugish the gangsta is that is singing....

No matter what type of music you like, you can ID a Pink Floyd song, a Rolling Stones song or a Beatles song. But only people that listen to rap/hip hop can ID it. Besides, they all steal/sample music done by legends! How is P Diddy gonna be a legend when he samples the Police's Every Breath You Take?

First of all Hip Hop does not suck! Secondly hip hop and rock 'N' roll are two different genres. There are many hip hop legends you just don't know them because you don't listen to Hip Hop! Oh and Hip Hop's roots come from blues much like thoes so called legends you like....not saying that they aren't but they all pretty much come from blues so you that answered need to get it straight!

Because Classic Rock bands changed the way music was looked at. They were rebels, and knew what people of all ages wanted to hear. These bands were a way for the world to be united, and were often music that people of all ages could understand. Even though it was mostly kids who enjoyed the classic rock scene, those people aren't kids anymore, and now pass the music on to their kids. Classic Rock seems to be something that all people can understand, and it doesn't put people down the way rap and/or hiphop does. Classic rock will always be made up of legends, because they are constantly bridging the "generation gap".

Good songs get covered by other musicians and are re-interpreted . "Yesterday" is the most recorded song ever. The best (or most well know) songs are called standards.
Lots of guitar players will cover say; a Jimi Hendrix tune, putting their own style and flavor in it. It also shows what kind of impact Hendrix still has on music.
I don't see how hip hop people can do such a thing. They are by using samples, doing cover versions. Can you cover a cover?

The difference is called Talent. Have never seen any in hip hop or rap. Never will either.

Because they aren't making music that will last - and I use the term "music" quite loosely. All it seems to be is about causing bodily damage (murder, mayhem) to another, committing some sort of a crime, or engaging in unnatural sexual acts and is so laced with profanity that it doesn't appeal to the masses. It only appeals to what can be thought of as a small minority.
