As an art/reading/writing middle school teacher I have to tell you that I am constantly teaching comprehension strategies to my students. I teach reading to low-level readers, it is important to work concurrently with language, vocabulary, and fluency to lead to comprehension.
By third grade, many students are reading to learn, not learning to read. When you read to learn, your focus is precisely reading comprehension.
Tell your teacher that he/she is wrong... We, at the formative levels are teaching comprehension to all who pass through our classrooms. It is, after all, part of the curriculum...

Wrong -- it is still taught...
Unfortunately, the use of text messages has seriously affected how people communicate and comprehend what they read- just look at all of the spellings on some of the questions in Yahoo Answers!
