False, comprehension is taught since second grade in Texas schools and in 3rd grade the Reading test is very important.

Maybe the professor should go to REAL LIFE instead of living in his/her privileged academia world.

As an art/reading/writing middle school teacher I have to tell you that I am constantly teaching comprehension strategies to my students. I teach reading to low-level readers, it is important to work concurrently with language, vocabulary, and fluency to lead to comprehension.

By third grade, many students are reading to learn, not learning to read. When you read to learn, your focus is precisely reading comprehension.

Tell your teacher that he/she is wrong... We, at the formative levels are teaching comprehension to all who pass through our classrooms. It is, after all, part of the curriculum...
