I would have to aggree with spiegy2000 it has to be the shawshank redemption it has a bit of everything the cameramen did thier absolute best work ever the acting was out of this world the plot was fantastic the moods were only enhanced by thomas newmans soundtrack and might i say they were a testament to his abbilitys as a songwriter.

i only have one gripe about the movie which in my oppinion is a perfect peice of ciematic history.

Nominated for 7 Oscars. Another 11 wins & 13 nominations.

none of them were for tim robbins absolute saccralige it's discusting.

just to reiterate my point i have found this article.

Shawshank Redeems Hollywood, 27 August 2002
********** 10/10
Author: Wesley S. Walker from Paducah, KY

Can Hollywood, usually creating things for entertainment purposes only, create art? To create something of this nature, a director must approach it in a most meticulous manner, due to the delicacy of the process. Such a daunting task requires an extremely capable artist with an undeniable managerial capacity and an acutely developed awareness of each element of art in their films, the most prominent; music, visuals, script, and acting. These elements, each equally important, must succeed independently, yet still form a harmonious union, because this mixture determines the fate of the artist's opus. Though already well known amongst his colleagues for his notable skills at writing and directing, Frank Darabont emerges with his feature film directorial debut, The Shawshank Redemption. Proving himself already a master of the craft, Darabont managed to create one of the most recognizable independent releases in the history of Hollywood. The Shawshank Redemption defines a genre, defies the odds, compels the emotions, and brings an era of artistically influential films back to Hollywood.

I hope this answers your question as you can see i feel very strongly about this matter and i hope this has stated the case for the biggest truimph in cinema to date.

waiting with baited breath.

CRASH

Well, the best movie I think was ever made -- 1957 (I'm not that old) starring Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr -- "An Affair to Remember."

Cary Grant is a playboy engaged to some woman and Deborah Kerr is a night club singer being wooed by a man she's not in love with. The two meet on a European cruise and end up spending time together, Cary Grant takes Deborah Kerr to meet his Grandmother and of course the two main characters fall in love. However, they agree to meet in six months (after each has fulfilled their career goals --he's a painter, she's a singer). Unfortunately she is struck by a NY cab and is paralyzed.

What I like about the movie, the couple makes a plan and each pursue their prespective careers in order to have a foundation prior to marriage. However, you know what they say of the best laid plans of mice and men -- don't usually work out. Yet, when you have true love -- unconditional love -- any obstacle can be overcome.

The movie was remade with Warren Beatty and Annette Bening.

There are a few that score the same for me, so I'll just point 1.

The Green Mile
If you think beyond the plain history of the movie you will notice that it speaks of allot more then just crimes&punishment. It's about racism, history, preconceitous people, "judging a book by its cover" and alot more... If you give it deep thought, then you will notice that the movie as allot to offer.

(by the way, the convicts "speciall powers" might be seen in 2 ways, for the believers, as an act of God, for the non-believers, then it's to reinforce the idea that some of the most pure persons are some times punished unfairly)

Oh, this is so hard, so I'm putting five best movies, with reasons:
1-- Evolution - v.funny and ridiculous (who knew 2 tonnes of head and shoulders could save the day?!)... also, Duchovny/Jones and Duchovny/Moore make great acting teams.
2-- Stargate - absolutely brilliant, intrepid and well, just brilliant
3-- Shujon Shoki - a Bengali film kinda based on Romeo and Juliet (rival families and all that) but with a happier ending... some great jokes and brilliant comic relief... it's in Bengali though... "shob shokireh parkoreeteh nebo anai ana tumar bella shonar, tumar khaneh shona, shoki goh... ami premeh madgeh madgi. ami tumar poysha nebo nah..." (title song, loosely translated as "from everyone I take money but I'll only take your golden earrings, Shoki dear. I'm the want that you want, I won't take your money.") lol... apparently it's a romantic endearment that doesn't translate well... the guy who sings it is a ferryman.
4-- Blues Brothers - that car chase... need I say more?!
5-- X Files: Fight the Future - excellent continuation from season five of the hit series... and natural progression of the alienistic plot and the Sculder relationship dealie

G**, there are so many more films I want to mention...

It's very hard to pin down the best movie ever made; there are so many great ones, and they're great for different reasons, but if you put a gun to my head, I'd have to say 'Casablanca', because it's just a classic love-story, wonderfully told; Then there is 'The Godfather', again, just a great story wonderfully put together and with an excellent cast. More recently, 'Gladiator' , 'The Shawshank Redemption', or maybe..............

I think the best movie ever made was Gone With the Wind. It was a timeless story of love against all odds, and it doesn't have a happy ending. It shows the regret that comes from not following your heart and making the choices you know you should make.

The best movie ever made is: Pride and Prejudice. I loved it because it is a classic love story, its funny, its sad and in then end the 2 main characters end up together. You find out what happens to all the characters in the film and you are not left wondering what happened to anyone!

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Why? I loved this. It makes you treasure your memories, (even the bad ones) and it makes you realise what an impact another person can have on your life. It inspires you to seize the moment, travel the world, live life how you want to live, and do it with someone who knows you inside out. It makes you realise that relationships aren't perfect but that's what makes them real. It also gives you an insight into how your mind and memory works, and how important it is to remember the happy moments in life. (Slushy answer, but a truely inspiring and thought-provoking film, and one that leaves you wondering where life will take you)

Apocalypse Now - so many fantastic moments - riding in the helicopter with the ride of the Valkyries playing, the immortal line "I love the smell of napalm in the morning" and of course Marlon's performance - and to think the film nearly didn't get made!!

Pulp Fiction...Incredible screenplay, great actors, lines that make the movie a classic. Parts of this movie have you in suspense to see what will happen next. And it is just plain cool!!
