It's supposed to be a corruption of Moorish Dancers. I don't think the dances originated with the Moors but a lot of sides used to black their faces (so as not to be recognised by their employers/the clergy, perhaps ... or maybe because the dance was in honour of a long-forgotten deity - who knows.)
It's certain, though, that dances like it have been performed since the celtic tribes held sway and very likely before that. Anyone who has seen the Abbots Bromley Horn Dance (the oldest extant masks of which have been carbon-dated to 1100 AD) and then to have seen some of the cave paintings at Lasceaux (sp?) may have wondered how old these dances really are.
By the way, anyone who has not tried dancing in heavy boots while wielding holly sticks (not to mention hankies) may think its a bit of a laugh but, believe me, around the 5th pub car park it becomes very difficult indeed not to swipe your fellow sidesman's fingers. But blood is part of the ritual, they do say :)

Originally, in the year 376 ABC, all people called Morris were sent to the land of Mozzer where they were made to dance like they needed the toilet whilst wearing old flannels of all colours sewn together by the woman of the tribe who's breasts were closest to the groung whilst stand on a stool.
This practise is still alive today, although there are not enough people called morris left, so Nigels, Gordons and Percys are also accepted.

The origins of the term are uncertain, but one of the most widely accepted theories is that the term was "moorish dance" and "Moresco" (in Spain), which was gradually corrupted to "morris dance".

Brianna Rutherford. and that i like all of your different names, yet what's Kiki short for? And do you imagine all of us would call her after Alice Cooper? he's not that tremendous any extra, and Iris doesn't sound that very equivalent to Alice.
