Why does anyone want to get married anyways?

To profess the love you feel for another person
To obtain the rights [inheritance, adoption, etc.] given to marrieds
To celebrate the union of two souls

There should be no barriers to any two consenting adults that want to get married. Any barriers violate the separation of church and state.

Getting married is a symbol of love in many cultures and is a right that gives you equal standing with government laws, also it can be a written link on paper some people value... so bi, lesbian, and gay people would like for the laws of marriage to be equal because their love is equal to any straight person and it gives rights under the law and is a religous right cause many GLB people are Christians. Of course they can marry now. It's that legal junk that is behind. Marriage helps the rights of the couple's children as well.

Julia, why are you using Jesus Christ to justify your behavior and lifestyle? I mean, I could die for everyone else's sins, who hasn't? Do you think "Jesus Christ" or "God" will like you better? He's dead (or may have never existed), and the other "One"is noowhere to be seen or found. Are you trying to brownnose your way into "Heaven" under false pretenses when we both know what you really want to do? Are you willing to go legally insane over on something that probably might not even happen? Stick to the law to find your moral and ethical compass. If you can see it, it doesn't exist. You can see sexuality. Give that a try. Believe in that. You'll be a much happier person.

It is not just so we can have a party and wear fancy clothes....
for me.... the marriage is not the BIG issue....
a piece of paper with a government signature means nothing to me for sentiment....
RECOGNITION AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT?..... yea it'd be nice....but not a huge thing
The main issue for me however is EQUALITY.
EQUALITY is not telling someone that is gay, "Hey, you are allowed to marry a woman and that is equal...." EQUALITY is being able to marry the soul mate, life partner, one you are attracted to.... etc

I have a life partner which I have been with for only 7 years (exactly as if I were to be married to a woman)but we have built a life together and as str8 couples have that RIGHT to be called family..... for instance, (1) if my partner went into the hospital with a life threatening injury and is in intesive care I have no right to see him... the doctors and nurses have the right to discriminate due to the fact that there is not a legal marriage. (2) financial benifits when filing for taxes are not available to me. (3) married couples also have the benifit of common law. if I were to die without a will it is easy for brother/sister/other family to protest the assets in my name going to my partner... (ok so this is something that can be planned but I know of a guy who lost his partner of 35 years and thought that the will prepared by his late partner would take care of issues. the family was able to latch on to a small technicality. unfortunatly there was only one witness that signed the will and the state law said that was not enough. the house and estate that was built by both guys was taken away by the his partners family.... this problem would not happen if it was a legal marriage of this many years)...

anyway...those are just some reasons

Gay people just want to be given the same right to get married as heterosexuals. Whether or not they do get married is their business.

Because I fought for this country, I have the right to live, breathe and love an individual just like you do. If I have the right to die for the country, vote for the country, pay taxes for this country, why should you have more rights than I. There is something called seperation of state and church. Whose next to have their rights taken away from them? This is not a theocracy, this is a democracy. Wake up and open your eyes. GAY GUY USING FRIENDS PROFILE.

Because those of us who are in long term relationships want to protect that relationship. Presently, if one of us is in the Hospital, our partner is not allowed to see us. If a gay couple owns a house, and one person dies, the surviving member stands a good chance to lose that house. There are numerous other rights that go with marriage that we cannot enjoy. Does this sound fair to you?

Why do straight people want to get married? Same answer for both. As humans, we invented the whole concept of marriage so who are we to say that, "those people can be married and those people can't." Seriously, it's their business and it won't affect everyone else.

How can you even ask this question?

It's so gay couples will the same legal protections and privileges straight married couples have.

We're talking about governmental recognition and legal protection, not religion. Why shouldn't gay people's rights be protected by the government?
