Yes. *All* human beings of *every* age needs some sun. Without sunlight, the body cannot produce "vitamin D" (not really a vitamin--it's actually a hormone). A few minutes a day in summer (with face and arms exposed and no sunscreen) is plenty.

Too much sun isn't good for anyone no matter what age. If you are worried about vitamin D absorption, the amount of sunlight a baby gets going from house to car is enough to prevent rickets.

Any studies? I'm sure there are - it is said that a baby should gets a good dose of vitamin D per day (15 - 30 minutes in the sunshine).
Ooops - I forgot to add, use sunscreen! Thanks to the following answers that reminded me.

Yes. While we all need exposure to sunshine, it can be especially damaging to the soft skin of the very young. Early sunburns lay the groundwork for future skin cancer. I can't quote a source for you, but you could go to webmd.com to start your search for more definitive facts.
