Will the rest of the country follow this good decision?

What's the point and what does it prove? All it says to me is that there is a group of legislators who are afraid of what they do not understand and they are letting the religious right wing control them. It has never been proved that gay marriage will hurt anyone or anything. All that this proves is that those who fear more have the loudest voice. Problem is they know not what they fear.

New York didn't decide anything. The Court of Appeals chose to uphold rather than overturn an existing law. It was a good decision strategically, and since every poll done, indicates a majority of New Yorkers favor gay marriage -- in time a new law will be passed, which the same court will uphold..... not sure what got your knickers in a twist fellow -- but it surely doesn't even mean anything. Decisions like this were made routinely about interracial marriage -- until it was clear that a solid majority supported interracial marriage nationally -- then the decisions started going the other way. It always takes time. *shrug*

Although I don't agree with the NYS High Courts' decision, it was a good one nevertheless.

If the decision were in our favor, it would fuel conservative (read: radical far-right activists) support. Since it was a decision to uphold the extraordinarily bigoted and hate-filled ideology that marriage is defined by opposite genders, then there is a very good chance (read: MOST excellent) that anything BUT a Republican't will garner an office in the mid-terms.

So strategically it was a good thing, although I'm sure the bigot writing the 4-2 decision doesn't think of it in that sense.

WAY TO GO NYS SUPREMES! You're going to find that you've given us a great gift.

EDIT: As an afterthought, I wonder if these same judges would be considered "activist judges" if the decision was in favor of Equal Status in Marriage? Hell yes! Where are all the Bible-thumping, far right activist bigots who have labeled judges as "activists" now?
Kinda makes me wanna yell, "Activist judges! Take the courts back!"

I was compelled to say that.

It is a sad state of affairs when the government takes away basic human rights - I am fortunate to live in Canada (Toronto, Ontario to be precise) where gay marriage is alive and well. Some may say that gay marriage is not a basic human right - however, if the government starts here, who's to say it will not want to pursue further action against gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered people (essentially taking more away)? As with most minorities, the gay civil rights movement has worked hard to ensure rights for many many years. And with all this work, it still doesn't mean that gay/lesbian/transgendered people aren't still discriminated against, bashed etc. The government banning gay marriage, is the same discrimination (in my humble opinion). For a country that is supposed to be the land of the free, it seems to be free only for those who the government decides has the right to be free.
btw...i'm a lesbian, who is happy and proud (and glad to live in Canada)

Ahh,NO!!People should be allowed to love whoever they want!I mean, this our society doing this!In fact the greeks, one of the most powerful empires of all time accepted gays as normal. The fact that Alexander the great had a male lover has even been considered. So no,not a good idea!I personally believe that theres nothing wrong with loving somone from the same gender. To persecute others for their beliefs and prefrences is wrong on so many levels.Shape up people!

Fact check. New york didn't ban gay marriage. The courts said that it is currently not in the constitution of the state. The legislature can, and will add it however.

Fantastic. NYS just lost millions in tax revenue. Local lawyers have lost millions from potential divorce cases. Any time a decision is made that has the potential to cost the economy a billion dollars a year, it is a bad decision. So, go ahead, change your question to read "bad decision"

Its sad that you have nothing better to do with your time then to spread hate.
Gay people just want the same rights that anyone else has. If hetero marriages will be destroyed because two other people love each other then they were not strong enough to make it from the beginning.
Try being more accepting and tolerant. You could have used this time to be positive. Erase hate

Let us hope not. Oppresion of a group of minorities is the story of time, but if memory serves things change as time marches on. Be patient and keep fighting, one day we will Marry, Legally.
